Statement from the Artist
"Participants will learn to create rich surfaces inspired by the natural world.
Techniques will include:
- Handbuilding Satake Style-Stretched kohiki slip to make cups, teapots, etc.
- “Kurinuki” technique to make a sculpture/vase, chawan, box, etc.
- Using wheel and/or handbuiling: adding Dobe mortar on the pieces to make yunomi, chawan, sake bottles, plates.
I will also be sharing my experiences and knowledge in a discussion of the Japanese aesthetic. Participants will gain insight in finding the beauty in imperfection, the meaning of “wabi-sabi”, and the importance of “ma”- the space in between.
Akira is widely sought after as an instructor and lecturer and has been invited to teach and exhibit throughout the U.S., and in France, Italy, Belgium, Israel, Australia, Spain, Chile, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Bali, Greece, and Japan."
Age & Skill Level
16+ with basic hand-building experience.

To cancel your reservation and receive a refund (minus a $25.00 cancellation fee) please notify us at least 30 days prior to the start of the workshop. No refunds will be made within the 30 day period before the workshop begins.
